Statement of Significance

The Silver Elm / Variegated European Field Elm (Ulmus minor 'Variegata') makes a significant aesthetic contribution to the immediate landscape of Pembroke Street anda broader contribution to the suburb as a whole. At this local level it has a very important cutural and historical link to the design of the suburb. Surrey Hills is noted for the English influence in its street names, tree lined streets, house architecture and private gardens. Within this context Edna May Simpson was influenced by this heritage planting style when she selectively purchased and planted this tree in 1960.<BR>Theheight-girth-spread dimensions of this Elm make it a prime example of the species/cultivar within a suburban environment. Similar comparable specimens around Victoria on the Significant Tree Register are mostly located in large public garden, avenues, historic gardens and the like. So its impressive presence in a suburban landscape is culturally significant.
