Statement of Significance
The Strawberry Tree is considered to have been one of the largest such trees in Tasmania, and whilst at present is not in excellent condition it still provides an indication its past great size. Established in 1838, the gardens at Franklin House were an integral part of this colonial gentleman's residence, firstly providing a utilitarian landscape as a small farm for Mr Britton Jones and then providing vegetables, livestock and income for the Hawke's family and boys school. Although the scale of the garden has been diminishe d with time, the garden is able to maintain a sense of continuity with the past , and has retained form and function compatible with its original purpose.
