Statement of Significance

This specimen of the newly described Werribee Blue Box (Eucalyptus baueriana subsp. thalassina), is growing naturally on the Werribee River flats.
Its close proximity to salt water and exposure to salt-laden winds makes it an important genetic and horticultural specimen for propagation.
Its location also makes it the most southern specimen of the subspecies in Victoria as it is far removed from other colonies of its type further up river in the Werribee River Catchment.
Its curious growth form, with the main trunk reclining on the ground, is a result of the strong and violent southerly winds which blow directly off Port Phillip Bay into the mouth of the Werribee River.
The ability of eucalypts to continue growing after after such storm phenomena and redirect energy to axillary main limbs to become new upright leader, is exemplifed in this specimen.

History

It maybe a sole survivor of a more extensive colony or have originated from seed deposited by a past flood event but this is the southernmost specimen of a rare and endangered subspecies.

It is thought to have germinated some time during the early 20th Century, although its actual age is not known.

Other

Although access is restricted, the tree can be seen at a distance from the road siding at the end of K Road, on top of the Red Cliffs which overlook the Werribee River and flood plain.
